Growing Dazzling Dahlias by Emily Cleaveland
Dahlias have become quite the “mania” among gardeners and brides, and new varietals are popping up all over. Join Emily Cleaveland (The Dahlia Lady) to learn all about growing dahlias, start to finish: where to buy the tubers, what to look for in a tuber, where/how to plant them, how to fertilize/water and stake/support them, how to cut the flowers, train them into dormancy, and dig and overwinter them. You’ll also learn about dahlia varieties and breeding.
Emily has been growing and selling dahlias for more than two decades. Her farm in Springfield, NH, has been featured in many periodicals, including New Hampshire Home and Here in Hanover. She’s a regular at the Norwich Farmers’ Market where her tubers sell out quickly the last two weeks of May, and her cut flowers are available late August through October. They are also sold at Allioops! in New London and Cobblestone Floral Design in Concord. https://bydesigndahlias.com
This adult program is part of a series produced by the Hanover Garden Club in partnership with the Montshire Museum of Science. It will be held in person (with yummy refreshments made by our members!) and via Zoom.

Houseplant Repotting Workshop (Members Only)
Spring is the time to repot houseplants. Sometimes it is a two person job and always it is messy. On Sunday, April 27th from 10am-2pm and Monday, April 28th from 10am to noon, you can make the mess at the HGC Greenhouse and get help from fellow plant lovers. The Club will provide the soil (general, succulent and orchid). You bring your houseplants that need repotting/dividing/pruning.
This workshop is outside, so dress appropriately for the day. The Club has some plastic pots, but bring your own pots, particularly large ones, if you can. Frequently participants share extra plants or leave plants behind which might be potted up for the Plant Sale, but that is not the purpose of this workshop.
For questions or more information, see the April newsletter. If you’d like to become a Member to participate visit this page.

We are the ARK: Returning Our Gardens to Their True Nature Through Acts of Restorative Kindness by Mary Reynolds
Bad news for the environment comes at us every day, stealing hope from the people who care the most. And hope is a vital impetus for action when fighting against the odds. In this inspirational presentation, Mary Reynolds will describe how We are The Ark offers a way to restore the Earth’s native plant and creature communities “patch by patch.” She’ll show how to weave layers of life back into land under our care to create as supportive a sanctuary as possible for our shared kin on earth. And she’ll remind us that our role on this beautiful home of ours is one of guardian, not gardener.
Mary is an Irish woman, internationally acclaimed landscape designer, bestselling author, inspirational speaker, and founder of the global movement We are the ARK, a practical groundswell movement that finally shifts the environmental game in nature’s favor. https://marymary.ie and https://wearetheark.org/

Beyond Perennials by Henry Homeyer
During his presentation, Henry Homeyer (The Gardening Guy) will share photos that will give you ideas about how you can enhance your garden by adding interesting trees, shrubs, stonework, art, and whimsy. Most of the plants he’ll show grow in his own gardens—and could in yours, too, including many native plants. Bring questions relevant to your own gardens!
Henry is a lifelong organic gardener, garden writer, and designer living in Cornish, NH, where he has been planting flowers and trees since 1970. He is the author of four gardening books and has written a weekly gardening column for newspapers around New England for more than 25 years. He teaches organic gardening workshops throughout New England and served as the VT/NH associate editor of People, Places and Plants magazine for 10 years. https://gardening-guy.com

Beatrix Farrand’s American Landscapes
Beatrix Farrand’s American Landscapes follows award-winning public garden designer Lynden B. Miller as she sets off to explore the remarkable life and career of America’s first female landscape architect. Beatrix Farrand (1872–1959) was responsible for some of the most celebrated gardens in the United States and helped create a distinctive American voice in landscape architecture. Although she created gardens for the rich and powerful, including John D. Rockefeller, Jr., J.P. Morgan, and President Woodrow Wilson, she was also an early advocate for the value of public gardens and believed strongly in the power of the natural world to make people’s lives better.
During this 62-minute film, Miller journeys to iconic Farrand gardens, engaging designers, scholars, and horticulturists in a spirited dialogue about the meaning and importance of this ground-breaking early 20th-century woman. Miller’s experience as New York City’s most prominent public garden designer is woven into a wide-ranging biography of Farrand’s life and times. www.bullfrogfilms.com
